A few months ago, Care Plus Group Charitable Trust awarded £320 to purchase sensory equipment and allow a parent and baby group to be established at Open Door, Albion Street, Grimsby.
The group will operate as a free drop-in session for any parents to utilise the sensory equipment as a parent lead activity suitable for babies 0-9 months. There is a huge benefit to both parents and babies for having a change of scenery and interacting with other parents in the same situation, regardless of their financial situation.
Local parents and children will benefit directly from this grant due to it being a new, totally free service however this would also be an excellent opportunity for the skilled Open Door staff to sign post, refer and raise concerns for any health or welfare issues or queries that may arise as they already do with the baby weighing clinic.
When a new baby is born into a family, lives change dramatically and although this is a wonderful time, it can also become very stressful and isolating for the main care giver. Being able to get out of the house to go to a group helps to boost mood and help maintain good mental health.
Sensory play specifically has been shown to help improve a variety of aspects of babies’ development such as awareness and alertness, cognitive/language skills and providing a calming and relaxing learning experience in what can be a chaotic and confusing world for a young baby.
The sensory drop-in group will run bi-weekly at Open Door alongside the baby weighing clinic in a separate, private area. This parent and baby group will be run as a voluntary service which is not affiliated with Open Door’s current services.
